LOCALE #3 | A4 Members’ Show 2019

LOCALE #3

24th Oct – 3rd Nov | A4 Sounds Gallery
A4 Members’ Show 2019

Locale #3 is the third in a series of exhibitions responding to the local area and home of A4 sounds. With this show the conversation between our members, our neighbours and the local area continues as we explore and reflect on the shared experience of our city.

Locale #3 began, like the previous years’ shows, with a walking tour of the surrounding area. Lead by Laura McQuaid, our neighbour and member of The Royal Canal Clean Up Group. The tour took our members up the Whitworth Road along the Royal Canal, through Glengariff Parade, down Royal Canal Bank and eventually to the depot at Broadstone. Along the way we spoke about the canal’s functional history and relationship to a variety of communities in the area past and present.

Locale #3 sees our members continue to convey their experiences of Dublin as a built environment in our largest iteration of Locale to date. Through their respective mediums of video games, mixed media, photography, film, moving image, paint, illustration, sculptural installations and performance they reconcile with a number of political, social, ecological and interpersonal themes that are to them salient elements of the urban landscape of our city.

Announcing We Only Want the Earth 2020

Announcing We Only Want the Earth 2020

We are absolutely delighted to announce our 2020 artistic programme ‘We Only Want the Earth’ in partnership with Create, Firestation Artists’ Studios, Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI), Movement of Asylum Seekers Ireland (MASI), Migrant and Ethic-Minorities for Reproductive Justice (MERJ), and Dublin Central Housing Action (DCHA).

We are living through a time of sudden and unpredictable societal change caused by interlinked issues of global warming, the collapse of the neoliberal order, a resurgence of violent misogyny and nationalism, growing inequality, housing and homelessness crises, and the growth of ecofascism. The latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that we have until 2030 to overhaul society in order to mitigate some of the worst effects of climate change. Whether or not we heed this warning, broad social changes will accelerate over the coming decade. If these changes are to lead to a just society, it is essential that voices that are often ignored, or whose very existence is treated as debatable, are instead prioritised. The arts play a fundamental role in supporting or challenging cultural hegemony, and therefore have a moral obligation to attend to voices that have been silenced.

During 2020 we will facilitate a programme of socially-engaged arts activities under the theme We Only Want the Earth. The programme is intended as a broad conversation about the goals and strategies of social change: what kind of society do we want and how should we get there?

To find out more please visit We Only Want the Earth information page here!

ALT DELETE

Alt-Delete is a series of workshops and talks designed to enable the curious and creative with the means to expose hidden networks in our digital world.

Taking the Exposing the Invisible Kit developed by Tactical Tech as a starting point, this series of exploratory workshops hopes to galvanize participants into probing the corporate, techno-political infrastructures around them and encourage reflection on our relationship with the same.

Using practical skills and techniques alongside various creative approaches that draw from areas including adversarial design, media archaeology and hacktivism, participants will be encouraged, and supported, to initiate and develop their own investigations.

Over the next few months, Alt-Delete will be running these workshops with the intention of hosting a public event in Spring 2020 which will show the outcomes of participants research and practice.

All disciplines and technical levels are welcome – from visual art to essays and from zero tech experience to too much experience.

A4 Sounds’ Secret Sonic Cinémathèque: Samhain 2018 edition

Secret Sonic Cinémathèque: Samhain 2018 Edition

Sat 27th Oct | Doors: 7pm | Tickets: €15/€10

Once again at A4 Sounds, we’ll be celebrating Samhain, the end of the summer and the harvest season, and the onset of the darker days of winter. We’ll be marking the midway point between the autumn equinox and winter solstice in a way that’s become almost traditional: with another edition of our live scores audiovisual spectacular, where an ensemble of contemporary musicians experiment with the relationship between live sound and moving image.

Each musician will in turn serve as bandleader for a semi-improvised score for a chosen piece of film or films, with visuals and score intertwining to evoke the atmospherics of the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain – a liminal time when the boundary between this world and the Otherworld could more easily be traversed.  Unlike some live scores events, which seek to recreate the sort of soundtracks which audiences of silent films might have experienced in the historical context of their original showings, the Sonic Cinémathèque events embrace a more adventurous and contemporary take on the relationship between sound and vision. The concern here is more with affect and inventiveness, than strict historicity.

The Secret Sonic Cinémathèque ensemble for the Samhain 2018 edition will consist of the following musicians: Andy Mooney (organ wrangler & carrier of uncanny energies, aka AMOON), Robyn Bromfield (synthesist & feline envoy, aka catscars)  Diarmuid MacDiarmada Music (interdimensional multi-instrumentalist & auxillary absurdist) and joined for the first time by improvising musician and Deserted Village label-runner Gavin Prior (astral ambassador & supernatural emissary & who knows what else), who we’re delighted to have back performing at A4. They’ll be aided and abetted by Andrew Edgar (chief projectionist & dabbler in time-banditry), who’ll be likely playing the wrong bits of film at the wrong times and at the wrong speeds, but that’s all part of the charm of the show at this stage apparently.

Costumery is  encouraged, but watch out for the mysterious wicker critters that have been foretold to appear on the night…

Exhibition Opening | In passing | Evelyn Broderick| Thurs 16th Aug

In passing | Evelyn Broderick
16th – 26th Aug | A4 Sounds Gallery

In passing

‘the head and the hand are not simply separated intellectually but socially’

Richard Sennet writes about craftsmanship and all kinds of makers. In his book The Craftsman, he uses the phrase ‘making is thinking’. Charmed by the idea of ‘making’, Evelyn Broderick uses socially engaged structures to shackle and bind drawing, printmaking, and sculpture together, to delve into the experiences of using your head, hand and body.

Evelyn’s work explores this social need and desire to make using our hands, and how, now more than ever, it is imperative to our understanding of our surroundings and ourselves. The daily use of electronic devices has slowly disconnected our touch to raw materials and the concept of making has become more of a fitting hobby than an everyday practical need. Society has always had a strong focus on work life but the demands in labour have changed, once physically exhausting, now emotionally draining. Evelyn worries about the attitudes of our limitless abilities that we seem to have created. It is now that we need to reconnect with the touch of making as a way to fully connect to a present and more fulfilled society.

In passing is a new series of work about making. A gentle nod to the game chess, Evelyn uses the pawn as a recurring motif where here it is dismantled into three structures. The title stems from a strange move in chess ‘en passant’, a special pawn capture. She uses materials both man made and natural to highlight the maker, rushes used to make useful objects and copper used in trade. The woodblock prints acknowledge the tactile experience of making a mark.

About Evelyn

Evelyn Broderick is an installation artist currently based in Stockholm. Evelyn received an MA (First Class Hons) in Fine Art from Liverpool John Moores University, founded an artist and art education cooperative (Quad Collective CIC) and worked closely with Turner Prize 2015 winners, ASSEMBLE, at Granby Workshop, Toxteth. Evelyn also led workshops on behalf of Tate Liverpool (Liverpool, UK), Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool, UK) and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid, Spain). Broderick spent 2017  participating in residencies across the UK and Ireland.

Ghost Eyes & Snake Rider’s Celebration Porty!
Sat 31st Mar| A4 Sounds Gallery

Join us one more time as we celebrate the joyous journey towards 2000 Fivers! We’ll be raising a toast to all the folks we couldn’t have done it without – which of course includes YOU if you’ve donated to our campaign or helped us out in any way.

Our entertainments on the night will include the inimitable A4 DJ duo of Ghost Eyes and Snake Rider, who’ve previously only brought their crowd-pleasing brand of all-vinyl, all-classic tunage to select audiences at super secret A4 events – maybe by the end of this night we’ll finally find out which one is Snake Eyes and which one is Ghost Rider!

We’ll also be casting a glance back to the heady days of FIVERTHON, the amazing launch party for the 2000 Fivers campaign, back when we didn’t know if were gonna get any fivers at all (we did and then some – THANK YOU!), and reliving some marvelous moments such as the auctioning off of the dregs of the bottles, the price of Conor O’Toole’s toplessness, and of course the unforgettable FIVERDANCE!

And while everyone in attendance is sure to be awesome, and it’ll be equal-opportunities amazing fun all round, we’ll also the VAPP or Very Awesome Person Place – just for those who’ve been extra generous and donated enough fivers. In the VAPP you’ll be able to get your complimentary cocktail, get your picture taken with Ghost Eyes and Snake Rider, and collect your goodie bags. But don’t despair if you’ve not donated quite enough fivers to be on the VAPP list – instead, perhaps bring along a few spare fivers, as you might have to bribe the A4 bouncer to get inside the VAPP!

8pm – 11:30pm
