Artist Talk | Obedient City | Michelle Doyle

Artist Talk | Michelle Doyle – Obedient City
In this talk artist Michelle Doyle will discuss her upcoming exhibition in A4 Sounds, “The Obedience of the Citizens Produces a Happy City” (or “Obedient City” for short), along with selected work from her practice. Doyle is an artist whose practice embodies a DIY ethos; immediacy, distribution and activism. She works within and outside of art institutions to produce artwork and performances.
“The Obedience of the Citizens Produces a Happy City” comes from the latin translation of the motto of Dublin City, “Obedientia civium urbis felicitas.” Broadly looking at the architecture and urban planning of North Dublin, where the materials come from, and their effect on its inhabitants, along with the rapid privatisation of public space and the weaponised marketing of the City. This exhibition takes the museumification of OPW sites and shows how the true essence of Dublin, one with with three castles ablaze, can be marketed to tourists in an interactive package.
The talk will include research, past works, collaborations and side projects. Doyle is an graduate of Fine Art Media in NCAD and the masters programme Art and Research Collaboration in IADT. Her interest in politics and activism stems from involvement in the punk scene, beginning in 2004. Doyle is also a musician; playing bass in feminist punk band Sissy and in her solo noise act, Rising Damp. She is currently the A4 Sounds artist in residence for Summer 2018.
