Joomchi Décollage: Experimental Paper & Fibre – with Ross Clancy

An introduction to the Korean paper-making technique of Joomchi and its relationship to décollage and Irish traditions of rag-paper and textile-making. Participants will learn how to transform layers of mulberry paper through wetting, rubbing and tearing the fibres to create a textured, textile-like surface. They will explore layering, joining and removing sections of paper to develop their own Joomchi décollage compositions. Participants will leave with a completed collage and an understanding of the basic techniques needed to continue working with Joomchi independently.

Who is this training for?

This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in paper, collage, textiles, printmaking or experimental making. No previous experience with Joomchi or collage is required, and the workshop is open to beginners as well as artists and makers looking to explore new approaches to working with paper and fibre.

What do you need?

Participants do not need to bring any specialist materials, essential materials and tools will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring personal sketchbooks, reference materials or existing work if they would like to explore how the techniques could relate to their own practice.

What will you learn?

Participants will have developed an understanding of the basic principles and techniques of Joomchi décollage. They will have explored the material possibilities of mulberry paper while developing approaches to texture, composition and process-led making. Participants will also have gained confidence in working experimentally and responding to chance and material outcomes, with techniques they can continue to develop within their own creative practices.

Breakdown of the class

1. Introduction & demonstration 

Introduction to Joomchi and its origins, followed by a demonstration of the basic process.  

2. Preparing the paper 

Participants learn ways to manipulate the mulberry paper in preparation for collage making.  

3. Joomchi making 

Participants develop their own designs through rubbing, pressing, tearing and joining the paper, exploring colour, texture and transparency.  

4. Developing the work 

Further experimentation with layering and manipulation to create individual compositions and surfaces.  

5. Finishing 

Participants complete their collages and learn basic methods for handling and preserving the finished work.

Artist bio

Ross Clancy is a Dublin-based visual artist and printmaker whose practice explores material transformation, repetition and process-led making. Working across expanded drawing, object and installation, their work considers the shared agency between the artist and their materials, exploring processes of repetition, registration, lifting and resettling, transplanting and relinquishing
