Maria McSweeney is a lens-based visual artist. Her practice explores place through the intricate process of deep mapping diverse landscapes. She is captivated by underwater aquatic spaces and overwater landscapes that hold unique ecologies and ecosystems. Her work seeks to traverse these often underrepresented environments, with a particular interest in mapping and documenting the dynamic rhythms and interactions within these ecosystems, encompassing flora, fauna, geology, and the impact of human activity.

Currently Maria’s work is focused on the underwater ecosystems around Dublin Bay and its offshore islands. Using snorkeling and scuba diving as methods of exploration, she approaches these areas through an ecological, hydrofeminist lens. Working primarily with analogue lens based processes, she is also experimenting with sustainable and ecological alternatives to mainstream darkroom practices. Her work also integrates social engagement, connecting with communities of interest as she explores these environments.

Maria McSweeney (1998) holds a BA degree in Sculpture and Combined Media from Limerick School of Art and Design. She holds a Level 9 Professional Certificate in Sustainable Exhibition Making and is currently pursuing a Level 9 Professional Diploma in Art and Ecology, both from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. She is a studio member of A4 Sounds a non-profit artist-run workspace and gallery in north-inner-city Dublin
