ABOUT

On Wed 27th Aug 18:30-19:30 we’ll be joined by crash-stop as the next guest artist to share in our final artist talk of this series! Come along to learn about their practice. If you are interested, please RSVP below. These talks are open to the public so invite your friends along!

Based in rural Co.Offaly crash-stop’s work is based on misusing and leveraging flaws in software and hardware to reinterpret and remake found or generated sources including VHS, public domain black and white or silent movies (especially German expressionist and film noir), government information films, and ad-breaks from satellite television.

Investigating the interplay between technology and ideology he explores online environments, utilizing glitches and software manipulations to critique underlying systems, heavily influenced by Jodis My%Desktop, to reimagine the computer desktop as a performative space.

Recent work shown at Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta, Malta, as part of the group exhibition ‘GLITCH: ONTOLOGICAL EXHAUSTIONS & SYSTEM FAILURES’, curated by Verena Voigt. examined Nazi propaganda films decontextualizing and questioning their impact by removing or altering ideological symbols through editing and datamoshing . For the same exhibition crash-stop created work which looked at artists censored, monitored or imprisoned by the East German Stasi using old black and white photographs that were then re-rendered as 3d objects, aiming to reclaim these artists edited out of official histories as our ‘New ancestors’. He also looks at the role of Meta in modern day algorithmic censorship via its platforms Instagram and facebook. These works reflected on the enduring influence of propaganda in contemporary society and the role of technology in both fostering and resisting extremism.

crash-stop has participated in national group and solo exhibitions and in international glitch art exhibitions online and sometimes irl and is an associate member of Format C arts organisation Zagreb ( https://formatc.hr/). He is a strong advocate for software freedom and open-source culture, which underpin the philosophy and processes he works with, documented in their blog and Codeberg repository where he shares scripts, methodologies and ideas. crash-stop’s work is published under a creative commons licence (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
