ARTIST BIO
Maria McSweeney (1998) is a lens-based visual artist, holding a BA degree in Sculpture and Combined Media
from Limerick School of Art and Design and a Level 9 Professional Certificate in Sustainable Exhibition making
from the National College of Art and Design.
Her practice revolves around the exploration of place and the intricate process of deep mapping the diverse
landscapes she encounters. Furthermore, her artistic practice integrates elements of social engagement, with
communities of interest that she interacts with when exploring these landscapes. Recently she has been
exploring the aquatic environments that exist underneath the waterline.
Maria is a founding member two lens based socially engaged collectives based out of Limerick City that
explore women’s issues. Women from the Inside explores surrounding women’s heath, menstruation and
motherhood. The Night Doesn’t Belong To Us explores women’s safety at night in Limerick City.
Her recent achievements include, an exhibition residency and month-long solo show of her work Submerged
Mythos with Leitrim Sculpture Centre, the Aran Island Underwater Photography Project, A Second Place Green
Award sponsored by An Táisce as part if Sustainable Sculpture Exhibition Trinity College, Dublin, a Super 8
motion film residency in collaboration with the Darkroom in Dublin, a solo exhibition tilted Images from India at the Clonakilty Community Arts Centre, The Artist in the Community Mentorship Award from Create Ireland, and
showing ‘Submerged Mythos’ at the Irish Museum of Modern Arts Earth Rising.
