Fetid domesticism is an intrapersonal dialogue between the many roles that Sylvia as a trans artist, activist and ecologist has to play. The installation consists of artefacts made, gathered and compiled during her residency that reflect these roles set in a portrait of a domestic environment overtaken by weeds.
The work reimagines stereotypical domestic imagery to challenge gender narratives and the idea of “home” through the lens of the capitalist landscape we live in: we can’t afford spaces of our own, there is little time for cooking, sewing, and gardening when we must fight against colonialism, shit healthcare, and the ever-looming threat of complete irreversible climate collapse and mass biodiversity loss.
Sylvia Maher is a visual artist and activist. Her practice combines the creation of vibrant pigments and dyes with visual narratives that explore relations between human and non-human worlds. Since graduating from NCAD in 2023 her work has focused on exploring urban Dublin looking for dye plants and other curiosities.
Sylvia is a recipient of the We Only Want the Earth Residency Awards 2023-2024.
