A4 Sounds would like to invite you to propose work for our upcoming exhibition as part of our We Only Want the Earth Programme in August 2022.

The exhibition will be in two parts, an in gallery exhibition and broadcasted exhibition. We invite you to submit your idea for consideration to one of the strands by Friday 29th April.

About We Only Want the Earth

The context for We Only Want the Earth is ongoing, unpredictable social change. The neoliberal order and the unipolar system of US hegemony are collapsing. Climate change is accelerating, and alongside it eco-fascism and “lifeboat ethics” are growing in Europe and elsewhere. The Covid-19 pandemic has worsened the crises of inequality and homelessness. We are living through Gramsci’s interregnum: the old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born. New opportunities for radical social change present themselves, but they are accompanied by reactionary violence that seeks to return to an imagined idyllic past. In this context, deliberative and discursive arts practices are urgently needed.

Since 2020 we have been facilitating a programme of socially-engaged arts activities under the theme We Only Want the Earth. The programme is intended as a broad conversation about the goals and strategies of social change: what kind of society do we want and how should we get there?

For this exhibition we are cultivating a garden of sorts. We invite you to respond to the the theme: The stars are in the earth. Please download the brief via the link below.

DETAILS

Proposals can be serious or completely absurd and use a wide range of mediums including but not limited to sculpture, video, powerpoint, radio, performance, textiles, print, intervention, walking or audio tours. The work may be pre existing or a proposal for new work to be made over the coming months.

Throughout the process there will be one-to-one crits with selected artists and informal fornightly drop in spaces to support the  development of new work, ask questions and seek feedback where needed.

FEE

A fee of €200 will be paid per artwork.

Please consider the fee and the value of your time when proposing new works. If it will take you longer than 13 hours to make your proposed work ensure it will benefit you in other ways.

Strand 1: Gallery Exhibition

Up to 12 artists to be selected
Fee: €200 per Artwork

We invite proposals for physical works for the gallery strand of the show that respond to the theme The stars are in the earth. We will also consider proposals that would utilise our garden space or public space in the area for example walking or audio tours, performances, interventions or actions.

StRand 2: Broadcast Exhibition

Up to 12 artists to be selected
Fee: €200 per Artwork

We invite proposals for video or sound works that can be broadcast on our website that respond to the theme The stars are in the earth. These could be performances, presentations, infomercials, video works, soundscapes, radio dramas and more!

How to apply:

Please fill out our short application form below.

1. For pre existing works

• Please submit a description of the piece and how it fits the theme of the exhibition.
• Upload documentation of the work

2. For new work

• Please submit a description of your proposed idea and how it fits the theme of the exhibition.
• Please submit a brief schedule of how you propose to make the work over the next 3.5 months
• Upload up to a max 3 examples of previous work that support your proposed idea.

Selection Process:

1. Applications will be collated and shared.
2. A panel of two A4 Team members and one consulting artist will discuss each application.
3. The panel will select artists by vote.
4. Artists will be informed by email by Monday 9th May.

Applications will be confidential and viewed by the panel only, and deleted after the selection process has finished.
