CREATIVE STORYTELLING FOR BEGINNERS

This four week class combines elements of creative writing with more practical, hands on creative development and creative thinking techniques, and is designed to open up the process of storytelling and writing. Participants will explore creative writing concepts through a mix of written and visual exercises, collaborative workshopping and play. This course will move the act of writing away from the often static, solitary nature of working alone with a blank page and move the process into a more collaborative, energetic and fun space where participants will be encouraged to share their work and learning with each other. This workshop is aimed at beginner writers but would be particularly suitable for screenwriters or creative practitioners interested in exploring a ideas through writing.
This course is aimed at beginner writers, screenwriters and creative practitioners.
Participants will get a strong foundation in narrative storytelling and writing and learn a series of creative development techniques that they can build on.
Week one: Creative thinking/development
Week Two: Narrative structure
Week three: Character development
Week Four: Will focus on another literary technique. Will emerge from the previous weeks work and based on the interests and direction the class takes.

Helen Flanagan is a writer and filmmaker based in A4 Sounds. Since graduating from the National Film School at IADT in 2012 she has had six short films funded and produced in Ireland as well as a children’s television series. She was winner of the Sean Dunne Young Writers Award, Filmbase and TG4’s ‘Lasair 5,’ The Film Offaly Award, The Dun Laoghaire Emerging Filmmakers Commission, Kildare Short Grass Films Award. Her most recent project was supported by Screen Ireland’s Focus Shorts and she was winner of this years Create Louth Tyrone Guthrie Award. Alongside drama she has written on animated TV series, had a childrens book commissioned by Monster Entertainment and writes stories, drama and performance pieces as part of Spooky Beure, a theatre/occult side project.
