AN INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITING

Join us for this non threatening (read fun) introduction to screenwriting. This course will cover the basics of narrative writing for film and will give participants a broad introduction to the basic principals dramatic storytelling. Participants will explore screenwriting concepts through a mix of group workshopping, fun exercises, and analysis of screenplays and films. The course will cover the basics of dramatic narrative, character, theme, scene writing and will incorporate creative development techniques with the aim of encouraging all participants to develop a new short project of their own across the course. Participants will work collaboratively, workshop ideas as a group and share their learning and ideas with each other in a structured, friendly and supportive environment.
Who?
No specific writing or film background necessary. Would suit anyone curious to learn the basics of writing for film or, writing more generally.
Breakdown of each class:
Class One: Basics of Dramatic Storytelling and Narrative structure.
Class Two: Character? I don’t give a Jean Claude Van Damn.
Class Three: The Intersection of Theme and Character.
Class Four: Visual Storytelling

Helen Flanagan
Helen Flanagan is a writer and filmmaker based in A4 Sounds. Since graduating from the National Film School at IADT in 2012 she has had six short films funded and produced in Ireland as well as a children’s television series. She was winner of the Sean Dunne Young Writers Award, Filmbase and TG4’s ‘Lasair 5,’ The Film Offaly Award, The Dun Laoghaire Emerging Filmmakers Commission, Kildare Short Grass Films Award. Her most recent project was supported by Screen Ireland’s Focus Shorts and she was winner of this years Create Louth Tyrone Guthrie Award. Alongside drama she has written on animated TV series, had a childrens book commissioned by Monster Entertainment and writes stories, drama and performance pieces as part of Spooky Beure, a theatre/occult side project.
