Artist Talk | Frank Prendergast – Interference
Frank Prendergast is a media artist whose interest is in teasing out the unseen threads that weave through human experience. Based on his recent graduate show Interference, Frank will talk about his understanding of the idea of interference and its influences on human perception. Interference responds to the multiple types of signal interference we experience in our everyday lives, including analogue visual interference represented in kinetic sculpture, acoustic interference perceived as sonic beats, and digital interferences that surround us all in an age of mass communication.
Frank will talk about how the various media used in Interference both allowed him to think in new ways and provided technical constraints on what could be built. This will involve tracing the path of the project, discussing the choices made along the way, and giving a rationale for its final form. With the benefit of hindsight, he will comment on the effects of certain technical choices and the implications of using particular materials, some of which led to near disasters towards the end of the project.
Frank is a fine art graduate of NCAD and was recently longlisted for the RDS Visual Arts Award 2018. He also works as an art technician and fabricator and has worked for a number of galleries and organisations including A4 Sounds, Mart, The Science Gallery and NCAD Gallery.
